Today, the fire service is better educated on the psychological effects that firefighters may experience while on the job. Education and legislation have helped to remove some of the stigma and barriers associated with seeking help. However, there is still a long way to go. Behavioral health is everyone’s responsibility. As individuals, we owe it to ourselves, our families, and our firefighting brothers and sisters to get help. As a group, there is a responsibility to recognize those that are struggling and encourage them to seek help. We must educate personnel and remove the stigma surrounding behavioral health, for people to be willing to seek help, as early identification and treatment are key to treating behavioral health issues.
When I am called to duty, God wherever flames may rage, give me strength to save a life, whatever be its age.
